Why I enjoy Basic Fantasy (and you should too!)
Iâve got to tell you about this new video I put together called âWhy I Enjoy Basic Fantasy (and so should you).â Honestly, I had so much fun making it because Basic Fantasy really feels like discovering a secret door in your favorite old-school game. You know that moment when you crack open a beatâup rulebook from the early days and youâre hit with a wave of nostalgia, but thenâsurpriseâyou also realize you can bend, twist, and remix the rules without breaking anything? Thatâs the magic Basic Fantasy brings to the table.
In the video I wander through why I keep coming back to this system. It lays down the classic coreâfour sturdy classes that feel familiar and solidâthen it hands you the keys to a whole world of extras. Want an elven archer with a knack for trick shots? Go for it. Dreamed up a swampâdwelling cleric who communes with mosquitos? Thatâs on you. And honestly, that freedom is what makes every session feel fresh and alive. I show you how easy it is to hop over to BasicFantasy.org, grab a handful of new classes or races, and plug them right in, like they were part of the original design.
But hereâs the best part. Basic Fantasy isnât some dusty relic hiding in your attic. Itâs alive, kicking, and growing thanks to a vibrant community of creators. In the video I share a few stories of how I experimented with house rules on the fly, tweaked a monster here, rebalanced a spell there, and ended up with a game that felt uniquely mine. Those little tweaks? They snowballed into some of the most memorable moments Iâve ever run at my table.
If youâre a GM itching for that perfect blend of old school grit and new school flexibility, or a player who just wants to roll some dice and see where the story goes, take a look at the video and pick up the 4th edition rulebook. Itâs a lean, mean, oldâmeetsânew machine that somehow hits all the right notes without feeling locked into a single path. Give it a watch, grab a copy of the book, and let your imagination run wild. Trust me, thereâs something really special waiting inside those pages.

Great game, really... If only it had a slightly better name đ
I will have to check the video out. I have Basic Fantasy downloaded, but haven't gotten to reading it, yet. Reading other rulebooks like Kal-Arath and Ironsworn.
