Gurps 3e Lite - A Great Starting Place for New Players and Game Masters!
So I just finished a new video where I talk about GURPS Lite. If you haven’t checked it out yet, it’s the free thirty-two-page version of the GURPS rules from Steve Jackson Games. A lot of folks recommend it as a starting point. Some even swear it’s all you need. I figured it was worth stepping back and giving it a closer look, especially for people curious about the system but maybe hesitant to jump into the full Basic Set right away.
Now let me be clear. This wasn’t some teardown or hit piece. I’m not interested in rants or drama. What I wanted to do was lay out what GURPS Lite actually offers and who might benefit from using it.
And here’s the thing. It does exactly what it sets out to do. It gives you the core mechanics in a clean, digestible format. You get the basics of character creation, skill checks, combat, movement, damage, and recovery. It doesn’t overwhelm you with options or the big toolbox that GURPS is known for. It just gets you to the table with a working character and a working system. If you’ve never touched GURPS before, that’s a pretty solid deal.
In the video I talk about how this version focuses on grounded, realistic characters. You won’t find rules for magic or supers or aliens, but that’s kind of the point. GURPS Lite is meant to be a sampler, not the whole buffet. And as a sampler, it’s clean. It reads smooth. The layout makes sense. And honestly, if someone handed me this at a game shop and said “try it out,” I wouldn’t feel overwhelmed.
It’s also great for teaching. You want to run a one-shot with people who’ve never rolled 3d6 in their life? Hand them GURPS Lite. Build some pre-gens. Run a low-stakes mystery or a heist or a spy scenario. You can absolutely make it work.
Now in the video I do touch briefly on what’s missing, but I didn’t linger there. The point wasn’t to criticize it for what it isn’t. It was to highlight what it does well. And the truth is, if someone plays through a session or two of GURPS Lite and enjoys the feel of the system, odds are good they’ll be ready for the full set sooner rather than later. That’s the ideal use case.
Anyway, if you’re curious, go give the video a watch. I walk through what’s included, where it shines, and what kinds of games you can run with just that little book in your hand. It’s short. It’s focused. It might help you decide if GURPS is something worth bringing to your table.
As always, no clickbait. No drama. Just gaming.
