AD&D Spell Spotlight: Wall of Force
Wall of Force is one of the most powerful defensive spells in AD&D. It is fifth level, only available to high-level magic-users, and once cast, it creates an invisible barrier that almost nothing can break. Not even a fireball or dragonโs breath gets through.
The spell can be shaped into walls, hemispheres, or even full spheres. The only way to remove it is with disintegrate. Otherwise, the barrier stays until its duration runs out. That makes it perfect for blocking monsters, splitting encounters, or buying time to regroup.
At many tables, the debates begin right after someone casts it. Can it be placed in mid air? Can air get through or voices get through? It depends on the Dungeon Master and his rulings.
The real fun comes from how players use it. A well-timed wall can stop a charging monster. Cast in midair, it can bring a flying enemy crashing down. Formed into a dome, it can shield the party from breath weapons, though you should consider air supply.
For DMs, it is just as useful. Nothing frustrates players like being cut off from the fight or having a treasure sealed behind an invisible barrier. Used right, it is a tool for tension and problem-solving, not just defense.
Wall of Force is not flashy. It does not deal damage. But it changes the battlefield completely. And in AD&D, that makes it one of the most valuable spells in the book.
