Tucked in the back of the Player’s Handbook was something most players skipped. Psionics. It wasn’t magic. It wasn’t a class. It was a secret system of mental powers that only a handful of characters ever got.
And it confused everyone.
You didn’t pick psionics. You rolled for it. After creating your character, you made a special percentile roll. If you had high enough Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma, and the dice liked you, you might end up with psionic abilities. If not, you moved on and never looked back.
If you were lucky enough to qualify, you entered a completely different game. Psionics used attack modes and defense modes. There were charts. There were points to track. You had psychic powers like mind thrust and ego whip. You could block with things like intellect fortress or tower of iron will. None of this worked like magic. It had its own rules, its own math, and its own problems.
Then there were the powers themselves. Clairvoyance. Cell adjustment. Astral projection. Some were useful. Some made no sense. Most DMs didn’t know how to run them. Most players didn’t know when to use them.
It felt like something out of a comic book. Not a fantasy world.
The truth is, psionics was hard to manage. It slowed down the game. It didn’t fit the tone. It came with a power system that felt stapled on. Most DMs either ignored it, banned it, or reserved it for strange NPCs. The players who did get it often had no one to use it on, because most monsters didn’t have psionics either.
Was it a bold idea? Yes.
Was it a mess? Also yes.
Psionics is one of those weird bits of AD&D that showed how wild Gygax’s imagination really was. He didn’t care if it broke the flow. He thought it was cool. And maybe that was enough.
It didn’t last. But it still lingers. Like a voice whispering in the back of your mind.
In Original D&D rules, acquisition of psionics was easier, but classes got penalised, Fighters lost Strength, Thieves lost Dexterity, Magic-Users and Clerics lost spell slots
I actually think it’s cool if as you said, it wasn’t broken. I can def see the benefits. Hmmmm maybe I need to homebrew something or google to see what other people have done…😊
