Today on the podcast, I’m talking about my journey with hex mapping—how I ignored it for years, brushed it off as just another tedious tool, and then finally gave it a real shot. And let me tell you, I’m kicking myself for not jumping on this sooner. There’s something about watching a world unfold, hex by hex, that makes everything feel more organic and alive.
Page 173 of the AD&D Dungeon Master’s Guide lays out the groundwork, but that’s just the beginning. There are tons of resources out there, from classic RPG supplements to modern-day tools on DriveThruRPG, each offering new ways to approach world-building. Whether you're crafting sprawling kingdoms, dangerous frontiers, or cursed wastelands, hex mapping adds a layer of depth that’s hard to replicate. If you’ve ever been on the fence about it, maybe it’s time to grab some graph paper (or a digital tool) and start filling in the blanks.

I'm obsessed with random hex mapping, trying to create a comprehensive wilderness survival method and have a randomised element to it, thanks for pointing out 1e did have a mapping content. will take another look, great episode.
Yup I never used Hex maps before until very recently. I figured why? Just use a regular map and it’s good. But I’m starting to get into it.
